As we try to understand the world around us, it is common to rely on local views or easy explanations. But the world is complex and unpredictable. The actors involved are many and advance conflicting interests. The answers are mostly nuanced, and rarely self-evident. Global Analysis is an effort to piece together these different perspectives and find out how they are related. Initially the focus is on Europe. The first piece in the opinion section is an assessment about the European Union of today, how it is influenced by its history, successes, failures, and how it could develop in the future. It is informed by an extensive historical analysis of the early years of European integration that is presented in the ten essays of the research section. Opinions and facts are strictly separated, as it should be. The third section offers a list of book picks that tackle some of the defining questions of our time. What does a Post-American world look like? What does China want? Is armed conflict between the USA and China inevitable? Is democracy losing the battle of ideas? Are authoritarianism and populism here to stay? Going forward this modest endeavour will try to assess the best ideas in the public debate and provide some original insights. The goal is to broaden the view on all the major players of international politics and connect the dots on how they individually shape the lives of everyone around the world.
